My Short Story
Earlier this year I received an inspiration, and I spent some time documenting what came into my head, working it out to uncover the story that struck me. I saw the characters and their contributions and experiences, and then I got an email about my village library’s writing contest.
Of course this put me into a cold panic, because putting myself “out there” just hasn’t been not scary for me. But, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, right? So I printed out my little 1000 word story and submitted it on the last day they were accepting contributions, February 10th.
And then I waited. And then I would forget about it only to remember again a few days later. And then I was casually checking my email on March 4th and saw an unusual email in my inbox about a writing contest: I was a winner! My story won first, or second, or third place and I would find out at the reception the library would hold a few weeks later, which was promptly cancelled because of the pandemic.
It’s in my nature to be a little embarrassed and self-deprecating about something like this, but I’m not. I’ve been so proud of myself; it’s been months now but it still feels like a new and exciting part of my existence.
My story is called The Day the Sun Didn’t Rise, and I would love for you to read it (it’s linked at the website above).
I hope you enjoy it!
